Our Safe Haven

In our home “HATE” is not an acceptable word.

We don’t allow it.

We don’t “hate” others.

We don’t “hate” our things.

We don’t “hate” ourselves.

The moment it comes out of any of our mouths unconsciously, someone nearby corrects us immediately.

“Mom! We don’t say hate in this house!” Yes, even the girls correct mom and dad at times.

I’ve been talking a lot about how I believe home is our happy place — but over the past 8 months I have also realized, home is our healing place.

It’s our safe haven. It’s the one place we can truly be ourselves, we can ask questions, we can speak openly, we can evolve.

When the girls get scared at night I tell them, “but this is your bedroom, it’s the safest place in the whole world.” It can be a safe place for anything we need to face head-on.

So although we may not feel comfortable having the hard conversations out in the world, maybe we could simply start in our homes.

Together we can learn, grow, change, and build homes that support one another.

To paraphrase Ralph Waldo Emerson, each of us sees in others what we carry in our own hearts.

And home is where the heart is.
